I will be the first to admit that I am a creature of habit when it comes to my yoga practice. I love to take class in the same place, in the same studios, and even at the same times every day. But as the summer months arrive, it’s so much fun to change up your normal routine by taking your yoga practice outside!

Here are my top 5 reasons why you should bring your yoga practice outdoors this summer:

  1.  Breathe in Fresh Air

Practicing yoga outside gives you an entirely new perspective and provides a much deeper connection to nature and the world around you. There is something so magical about feeling the sun kiss your skin and breathing in fresh air. I find it much easier and more rewarding to practice pranayama (breath work) and meditation in the outdoors where I am sounded by the natural sounds and elements of the earth!

  1. Become More Grounded

Yoga is such an amazing tool to help us ground ourselves – especially during times of chaos and uncertainty. Flowing outside allows us a unique opportunity to connect to the earth so that we can build our foundation from the ground up.

Many of the more grounding and balancing asanas are based from things we find in nature (mountain pose, tree pose, etc.) When you are grounded and present on your mat, that will often translate into the outside world. Practicing outside provides us a unique opportunity to truly connect to the earth and grow our roots from the ground up.

  1. Sun Salutations IRL

Sun salutations were meant to be an ode to the sun – the cyclical nature of the sun rising and falling, and then rising again. Doing a sun salutation in the sun adds a completely different element to the flow. Plus, being in the sun boosts your Vitamin D and make us feel warm, powerful and strong. Feel the energy of the sun and allow it to power you through your practice!

  1. Challenge your practice

Balancing postures outside of a yoga studio can be really difficult! Flowing outside not only provides a new perspective, but it also offers new ways to challenge your practice. A posture such as a headstand or tree pose might be easy indoors, but have you ever tried it on sand or an uneven surface? Finding a drishti (gazing point) is sometimes challenging in and of itself when everything tends to move and sway in nature.  Mixing up where you practice can help strengthen different muscles in your body – including your mind!

  1. Boost your Mood

After spending half the year indoors, it’s easy to understand why being outside can help boost your mood and make you happier overall. Studies have shown that people who spend more time outdoors show significant decreases in anger, depression and anxiety. Even just a short flow outside can improve your mood and overall well-being.

I would love to hear from you! Why do you enjoy practicing yoga outside?

On another note, I am in LOVE with this all black set from Kiava! I am wearing the Energy Bra (size small for reference) and the Black Pocket Legging 28” (also size small). This outfit is so comfortable and does not inhibit my movement while I flow. The leggings are high waisted and perfectly hug the smallest part of my waist. The back detailing is so cute on the sports bra and it holds me in for all my low AND high impact workouts! I have received so many compliments on this outfit!! If you are looking for high quality workout apparel with reasonable pricing, I would highly recommend this brand – check out their website HERE
