As someone who practices yoga almost daily, I love adding some variation into my workout routine. During the few months of the year that we have nice weather in Chicago, I really enjoy being able to exercise outside. That’s why I decided to start incorporating running into my weekly workout routine this summer. Since June of this year, I have been pushing myself to run at least 5 miles a week. Since then, I’ve grown to love my outdoor runs, and find it a great addition to my yoga practice. I don’t plan on running any marathons anytime soon, but I have noticed some positive changes in my yoga practice since I started running. Here are 3 benefits of adding running into your weekly routine:
- Running Increases strength and endurance for yoga
I have definitely noticed a huge change in my ability to do yoga vinyasa flows, as well as cardio sections in my yoga sculpt classes because of my weekly runs. I rarely lose my breath in even the hottest of classes, and my lung capacity is at an all-time high. I can tell I have become much stronger in my legs, which helps me have better overall form in class, which leads to less fatigue and reduces risk of injury.
- Running is another form of moving meditation
Honestly, running is one of the best ways for me to release stress and meditate. Most people think meditation is only sitting cross legged on the floor with your eyes closed listing to relaxing music or chanting, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Yoga is a form of moving meditation, and so is running (at least for me). Running allows me to take time for myself, clear my mind, focus on controlling my breath, and tune inward. It’s wonderful stress reliever!
- Running allows you to step outside of your comfort zone
I will admit that I am definitely a creature of habit. I love having a routine that does not change from week to week. Spontaneity is not something I usually enjoy, but running has helped change that. I love running around my neighborhood and exploring the different areas of Chicago. From the lakefront to the streets around my apartment, running is a literal breath of fresh air from my regular workout routine.
Speaking of comfort zones, I have recently been trying to push myself outside of my fashion comfort zone of only wearing solid and neutral colors. I love bright and colorful workout outfits, especially this time of year. So when I found Kiava Clothing, I was stoked! They have such a fun assortment of brightly colored leggings, tank tops and sports bras. I am obsessed with their unique strap-back sports bras, and they even cater to us petite ladies who need shorter inseams!
Let me start out by saying how much I LOVE the fabric of this outfit. It’s not only super lightweight, but also dries quickly. When I leave my yoga classes I’m usually drenched in sweat, so having a quick dry outfit is very helpful. I was a bit worried when I ordered the leggings in a light color, but even through my sweatiest workouts these leggings were not see-through at all! The high waisted fit is also very slimming and held me in during even the most intense exercises.
One feature that I particularly love about these leggings is the deep pockets. I can hold everything from my locker key, to my phone, without worrying about them falling out. Usually legging pockets are small and can only fit a few things, but these are different. They especially come in handy during long outdoor runs when I don’t want to hold my keys, phone, credit cards, etc.
I am obsessed with this hot pink sports bra – not just because the color is amazing, but I love the fun back design, and it’s made out of a similar lightweight material. It feels so soft & light when you’re wearing it, but it holds me in while I’m running, doing yoga, and everything in between! Safe to say I will be living in this outfit for the rest of the summer 🙂
